The lobectomy is the removal of one of the five main sections of the lung, known as the 'lobes'. It is a common treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. It is a fairly demanding process that requires precision and expertise. During a lobectomy, the tumor and any affected tissue is removed. As part of the procedure, the surgeon may also remove lymph nodes in the chest area to make sure the cancer has not spread. A drain is left in place after surgery to remove excess fluid and air from the lung. Drains are usually removed before leaving the clinic.
→ Many patients with lung tumors are candidates for lobectomy. Some patients with other cancers that have spread to the lungs are also occasionally candidates for this procedure.
→ Lobectomy can be performed either by open surgery through a lateral thoracotomy or by minimally invasive techniques : thoracoscopic (VAT) and robotics (RATS). We suggest to every patient, who has the possibility, the choice of minimally invasive methods as they offer multiple benefits. Through these advanced treatments, our patients can enjoy the following benefits:
→ As with any surgery or procedure, potential risks are involved in lobectomy surgery. Age combined with current medical conditions and a variety of factors can more accurately determine your risk for complications. Before surgery, we always make sure to thoroughly discuss with patients the specific risks, but also the procedure to be followed.
→ The hospitalization time required with the minimally invasive methods ranges from 3 to 6 days.
