The pleura is a thin membrane that covers the lungs and lines the inside of the chest. When there is a problem in the pleural area, it may be due to inflammation of the pleura or a build-up of fluid, air, gas or oxygen in the pleural cavity. Diseases of the pleura vary widely and can cause chest trauma and pain.
→ Pleurisy infection of the pleural cavity - often caused by a viral infection.
→Pleural effusion the accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity – this is usually caused by congestive heart failure.
→ Pneumothorax the accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity. Other lung conditions such as COPD and tuberculosis are often the cause.
→ Hemothorax the accumulation of blood in the pleural cavity, usually caused by a traumatic injury to the chest.
The common symptoms of pleural disease may include: difficulty breathing, cough, chest pain that is often sharp, fever and chills, rapid breathing or heart rate, tiredness
Thoracic surgeon Dr. Michalis Klimatsidas, in collaboration with interdisciplinary qualified staff of the Agios Loukas clinic, they offer comprehensive care for pleural diseases. Leveraging the latest technologies available, including minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery techniques whenever possible, we minimize the risk of complications, reduce blood loss and enhance recovery.
→ Treatment for pleural disease focuses on removing fluid, air, or blood from the pleural space, which should relieve symptoms.
→ The patient is put under general anesthesia for the procedure, which takes a few hours. The hospitalization is short (one to two days) and the recovery is fast.
