The scaphoid and bird-like thorax are two fairly common diseases of the chest wall, which are found at a young age. These are chest deformities, in which the ribs and sternum develop differently.
→ Pectus Excavatum
Also known as funnel breasts or sunken breasts, it makes the breasts appear hollow.
→ Pectus Carinatum (Pectus Carinatum)
Also known as a pigeon breast, a raised breast that makes the breasts look pushed out. The bird-like thorax is more rarely encountered.
→ These thoracic deformities do not only affect the aesthetic part, but can have significant effects on patients through the compression of the heart. There may be physical problems such as chest pain or difficulty breathing during hard exercise. Also, their aesthetic part can cause psychological effects such as low self-confidence or negative self-image.
Thoracic surgeon Dr. Michalis Klimatsidas, in collaboration with multidisciplinary staff at the Agios Loukas Clinic, treats many congenital abnormalities of the chest wall, including squamous and bird-like thoraxes.
→ We offer a minimally invasive repair of this defect and innovative pain control measures to shorten postoperative recovery. Both minimally invasive and traditional approaches for these conditions are available
→ A number of surgical techniques can be used, including procedures Nuss and Ravitch. Both operations are performed under general anesthesia. Both procedures aim to improve the feel and appearance of the breast and may have psychological benefits such as improved self-confidence. Both operations have a high rate of long-term satisfaction.
The Ravitch process allows the surgeon a good view of the chest. It also allows barless surgery to support the repair. The Ravitch procedure can help restore a breast that is not symmetrical. In some cases, a metal rod is placed in the chest to hold the repair in place. More often we use the patient's own muscles to provide the support.
The Nuss process it is less invasive, so the scars are smaller, there is also no need to cut or remove cartilage. A second operation is required to remove the rod. A curved rod is placed to push the sternum forward. The rod then remains in place to support the new shape for 2 to 3 years before being removed in a second operation. The bar is placed under the skin and behind the sternum.
Before any invasive procedure, we always make sure to thoroughly discuss with the patients all the existing options, the specific risks, as well as the procedure to be followed.
