Thoracic surgeon Dr. Michalis Klimatsidas in collaboration with qualified interdisciplinary staff such as gastroenterologists and upper digestive surgeons, treats, through a variety of surgical treatments, the benign diseases of the esophagus and cancer of the esophagus.
→ Benign diseases of the esophagus that may require surgical treatment include achalasia, paraesophageal hernia, esophageal diverticulum, esophageal perforation, and benign esophageal tumors such as leiomyoma.
→ Esophageal cancer it develops in the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Tumors occur in the mucosa, which is the inner lining of the esophagus. There are two types of esophageal cancer, each with different risk factors:
Cancers that start in gland cells in the lower part of the esophagus are called adenocarcinoma. This type of cancer is the most common. It usually occurs closer to the stomach. Chronic acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, and chronic heartburn can increase the risk of developing adenocarcinoma.
This type of esophageal cancer arises from squamous cells found primarily in the upper esophagus. The squamous cells tumors are associated with heavy alcohol consumption, smoking and organ transplants.
→ Patients with esophageal cancer, they may need removal of the esophagus, the so-called esophagectomy, and restoring the continuity of the gastrointestinal tract.
→ The type of esophagectomy is decided based on the disease of each patient. Most of our treatments are performed with minimally invasive techniques such as thoracoscopic (VAT) and robotics (RATS).
The patient is hospitalized for a short time and recovery is rapid.
As with any surgery or procedure, potential risks - although rare - are involved in esophagectomy. Age combined with current medical conditions and a variety of factors can more accurately determine your risk for complications. Before surgery, we always make sure to thoroughly discuss with patients the specific risks, treatment options and the procedure to be followed.
