As it is not always possible to diagnose the type of lung disease through tests, you may need to be referred for a thoracoscopic biopsy to get a specific diagnosis and approach the appropriate treatment.

The biopsy is a procedure performed to remove tissue or cells from the body for examination under a microscope. A lung biopsy is a procedure in which samples of lung tissue are removed to determine if lung disease or cancer is present.

The biopsy may also involve other anatomical formations, such as the pleura and lymph nodes, or lung or mediastinal masses.

In thoracic surgery, this is a common and not particularly complicated procedure. Biopsies are performed with minimally invasive techniques such as mediastinoscopy (cervical or anterior), h thoracoscopy (VATS) and in rare cases h robotics.   It usually takes about 1 hour. The patient is hospitalized for a short period of one day and recovery is rapid. 

The results are normally sent to the doctor who referred you for the biopsy. It takes at least 2-4 days for the lab to run basic tests, however, it may take longer for the final result to come out.

Once the results are available, the next steps of treatment will be discussed with you at the clinic and in collaboration with the doctor who referred you for the biopsy.
